10 Questions with Bill Crozier, Financial Planner at Skylight’s Cleveland Office

He has financial planning is in his blood, is a gym rat and his life revolves around horses.  In the latest of our “Making It Personal” Q&A series we find out a little more about one of our most experienced financial planners, Bill Crozier.

You’ve been in the industry 20+ years during which you have worked for various firms - what attracted you to join Skylight Financial Group?

I gravitated towards Skylight as it offers what I call a “plug and play” infrastructure.  It’s a firm that’s well established so you can come in and avail of existing resources and the experienced management of Paul Fox, president and CEO.  For me Skylight offered the whole package - marketing model, client service model, selling system through Sandler, IT infrastructure and a physical location to base yourself.  All these things are figured out for you which makes my life a bit easier and means I can focus on growing my business.  Obviously nothing is 100% perfect but no other firm that I looked at was even close.

What’s been the highlight of your career as a financial planner?

At my previous firm I was the top financial adviser for five straight years and attended five president conferences in a row.  I’m pretty proud of that.

What’s your backup career?

The honest answer is that I never considered any other career outside of the financial services industry!  My dad was a financial consultant and that’s what I always planned to be.  It seems I was destined for the financial world!

Tell us a little about your home life and family?

I live in Valley City with my wife and 17 year old daughter, who is a senior in high school.  Our lives revolve around horses!  My daughter loves horses and has been riding since the age of seven.  She owns and rides quarter horses and is very good at it too.  She recently qualified for the World Show which is such a massive achievement.  As you can imagine I’m a very proud dad!

What do you like to do outside of work?

Outside of work I’m the official “horse transport person”!  It’s my job to drive the truck and trailer from one location to the next.  Heh, somebody’s got to do it.

Outside of transporting horses, I’m a gym rat.  I go to the gym three or four times a week and I’ve been doing that since high school.  You could also say I’ve got the cycling bug.  I love to go road biking and it’s such a great feeling being outside taking in all the sights and sounds.  There’s a real sense of freedom that comes with cycling and it helps me stay fit and healthy at the same time.

When I want to relax, I listen to books on tape. I’m a big fan.  Also I’m an active member of Hope Community Church in Olmsted Falls.

Tell us something you are passionate about?

Making sure my clients receive the best service possible and building a great, long-term relationship with them.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?

Here’s two pieces of advice that have really stuck with me and that I’ve learned over the last few years.

1.       Go with your gut feeling.  If something feels good and right to you then trust your instinct and go with it

2.       You can control your actions; you can’t control the outcome

These may seem obvious, but it did take somebody to point these out to me!

Who do you most admire and why?

I’ve been in the industry now for over 20 years and have seen how many financial professionals operate across a multitude of firms and I really admire professionals that have built up well-run, professional financial planning practices.  They get all the parts right, are generous with their time and ideas and are smart operators when it comes to running a successful business.  What I particularly admire about these people is that they don’t just have large production records but they treat their clients respectfully.

What’s your secret superpower?

When I find somebody who thinks like I do, I am successful at connecting with them and building a good relationship.

Any little known fact about you?

After college I had a try-out with the Hamilton Wildcats (Canadian Football League) in 1990.  Unfortunately, I was injured during the try-out and was not able to finish.
