5 top questions I get asked from potential recruits about working for Skylight

Nearly all of the potential recruits I chat to hit on the same things so I’ve shared below the most common questions I get asked alongside the answers I typically provide. 

#1 What sets Skylight apart in the industry?

What really sets up apart is Skylight’s passion for relationship marketing.   The desire to help our clients is at the center of everything we do.  We commit to delivering a top-class end-to-end client experience by forming personal relationships with our clients, meeting with them frequently, listening to them to uncover their needs, finding the right solutions for them and educating them on product choices.   All our systems and processes are designed to support this.  Everything, down to the feel and look of our office space, is designed to enhance the client experience.

#2 What’s the culture like at Skylight?

Skylight is a dynamic firm full of young and passionate people who are great team players and “people persons”.  I always like to say that we’re not a bunch of people who just happen to work at the same address but we’re one team who exist to help our clients and community.  Although we’ve offices throughout Ohio there’s great synergy, support and communication between us all.  What strikes me most is that we have a genuine like for each other so it makes things easier and means we have a lot of fun! 

For example, just recently, we held a wonderful tailgate for clients, family and friends in Columbus.  Everything went off without a hitch.  Clients got to mix with other clients, our colleagues came down from Cleveland and we got to all hang out together socially, have fun and enjoy each other’s company. Those kind of events are so memorable and are greatly valued by all us folks at Skylight.

Also collectively, we do so much to support our community.  There’s just so many examples of what we do to enrich our communities by volunteering and supporting arts and culture, sports, business, special needs and LGBT organizations.  It means so much to be able to give back, integrate ourselves in the community and support what matters to people in society. 

You know, I could keep rambling on about how good Skylight’s culture is but this video probably sums it up better than I can.


#3 How would you help me become a successful financial planner?

While we fully understand and support your desire to be independent and manage your own time, we never want you to feel that you are in business alone but rather that you are part of a team who will develop you in all areas of your practice.  This support starts from the guy at the top, Paul Fox, President and CEO of Skylight, who will coach you about behaviours and attitudes, how to become a successful business owner and how to be accountable .  Then, Amie Palffy, senior partner at Skylight, will ensure your development in terms of products and case design.  You will also be part of a joint work team which will help you run cases, in addition to being paired with a mentor.  Your mentor is more like a buddie that you can go and have a drink with and chat about your progress in a more much more informal way. 

Skylight’s comprehensive support will help you with everything from marketing, lead management support, advice on business models to your business plan development and other tools which are all essential to grow your practice.  Basically, the whole package!

#4 What does it take to be successful in Skylight?

Our motto is “doing well by doing right”. To succeed in Skylight you need to get some key things right.  Firstly you’ll need to listen carefully to the resource and development team.  Crucially you’ll need to have a genuine desire to want to help clients and embrace the Skylight culture.  Also given Skylight’s commitment to the community, you’ll need to be happy to volunteer - be it your time, your money or both.  Finally you are likely to succeed in Skylight if you are a people person who’s at ease with networking, meeting clients and forming close-knit relationships.  The essence of our branding is around “making it personal” and our planners really bring this to life.

#5 What kind of financial planning process do you offer your clients?

In contrast to many firms which are very transactional, we pride ourselves on offering a comprehensive and integrated financial planning process.  We get to the right solutions for clients by listening, discussing pain points and uncovering needs.  Also to ensure we support our clients’ unique financial needs we provide a network of specialized and integrated support through our work with attorneys, accountants, property and casualty firms, mortgage brokers and our own in-house experienced specialists. 

Our emphasis is very much on the service we offer to our clients.  It all comes back to providing that first-class client experience!
