Corbin Blackburn of Skylight Committed to Reconnecting Lutheran West Alumni

7/23/2015

We catch up with Corbin Blackburn, one of our youngest financial planners based in the Cleveland office, to find out more about his involvement in Lutheran West Alumni and a recent event he has held in Skylight’s rooftop bistro.

What motivated you to get involved in the Lutheran West High School Alumni Association?

I come from a long line of family members who went to Lutheran West - from my grandparents, my parents, my siblings and my wife (who I met while at school) so you could say it’s in my blood!

Also my dad’s been involved in the Board of Directors for around 15 years and from him I’ve learnt first-hand how important it is to give back to your school and knew it was something I wanted to do too.  I had a great experience when I was at school and made so many great friends.  It’s a very tight knit community and when you are at school there you get to know so many people - not just in your grade but throughout the school.  Even as I went through school I knew lots of alumni that I met standing at the sidelines supporting games. It’s this closeness that makes it special.  Lutheran really lives up to its mission of inspiring scholarship, faith and community and I wanted to continue to be part of this.

Tell us a little about the alumni event that you have hosted over the last week?

The event was informal and connected former team mates who played basketball in the 2000s over a cocktail.  It was a fantastic night and it was particularly special as they got to reconnect with people with whom they shared a common interest.

What part do you play in the Association?

I’ve been helping the Association figure out ways to help people reconnect through events (like the ones mentioned above) and through social media.  In particular, I’ve been focusing on the younger generation who have been grads since 2000.  We’ve been looking at Decade Parties and organizing something special to get them involved in our big Homecoming event later this year.  Trying to connect people through interests they had while at school, like theater or sports, seems to be work very well.

As a young professional, do you have any advice for other young people starting out on their career?

I would say that it’s really important to stay connected as you launch your career.  You’ll need a lot of help to get started and associations, like the alumni, are so welcoming and supportive.  You can make really good contacts and good relationships that will hugely benefit you in both your career and your personal life.  There’s a real bond in an Alumni Association and everyone wants to see each other succeed.  I’ve become friends with people 20 and 30 years my senior and it’s great to have this range of friends with different life experiences.
