Mac Anderson: My inspiration for joining the Cleveland Heart Walk 2015

By Mac Anderson, Financial Planner at Skylight Financial Group, Cleveland

We all have inspirations and role models throughout life. While, like many, I certainly looked up to and learned from social and intellectual leaders, my grandfather has always been my greatest inspiration.

I was able to spend 16 wonderful years with him before he was claimed by heart disease after suffering numerous attacks late in his life. Of course, he forever remains my greatest role model. From a very young age I’ve been in awe of his life and his story.  As a child I would listen, captivated as he talked about his family’s struggles through the great depression.  He described how his family fought through the toughest of times, when dinner consisted of a spoonful of ketchup and water as tomato soup.  He instilled in me a passion of selflessness and grit, detailing his decision at 16 years old to fake his age, join the Navy, and fight for our country in WWII. From him I learned practicality - when he returned to Detroit after the war and received acceptance letters from both Purdue’s and Stanford’s Engineering program, my grandfather decided upon Purdue because the bus fare was less costly.  He taught me the value of persistence and hard work as he graduated with honors and went on to work his way up the ranks in Cadillacs Motors, eventually becoming President of Marketing.  Through his actions and experiences, my grandfather was my greatest teacher and a pillar of strength for my family.

When I was given the opportunity to join the American Heart Association’s Young Professional Board, I jumped at the chance. I saw it as a way to honor my grandfather and support a vital cause close to my own heart.  The Cleveland Heart Walk on September 26th is just one way the AHA raises much needed funds to help promote education and research to combat heart disease and stroke.  I’m delighted and honored to be joining my colleagues Jeff Zemito and Morgan Shepard to make up the Skylight team as we unite with the 7 million walkers nationwide to support this cause.  A highlight of the fundraising effort is that all funds raised from the Cleveland Heart Walk are used directly to support the great research institutions and educational advocacy right here in town.

If you are interested in visiting my Heart Walk page or making a donation please visit I’ll be thinking of my grandfather as I take that first step.  Thanks for your support!

The Cleveland Heart Walk is taking place on Saturday September 26, starting at the Port of Cleveland Dock 32.  For further information please visit
