Skylight sponsors USO Northern Ohio Golf Outing and Clambake
Skylight’s Business Private Client Group is delighted to be joining the USO as a sponsor of the USO of Northern Ohio Golf Outing and Clambake on Friday September 12, 2014 at Sweetbriar Golf Club in Avon Lake. We have invited two active duty military personnel as our guests to enjoy a day of good food, camaraderie and golf. Shoot straight will still be the order of the day!
Keven and Cathy Prather of Skylight’s Business Private Client Group are ardent supporters of the USO; a non-profit organization who have for more than 70 years taken on the task of caring for our wounded heroes, supporting families of the fallen and helping our service members’ transition back into civilian life. The USO plays an important part of active duty service personnel’s lives by providing warm and inviting places to rest when traveling through our nation’s airports. When deployed overseas the USO provides care packages, letters filled with best wishes from school children and thoughtful citizens and entertainment services - bringing a bit of home to young, often lonesome, service men and women.
“The USO is a fantastic organization which supports our Troops. This golf outing is USO Northern Ohio’s main fundraising event of the year and all monies raised will go to supporting our wounded or disabled troops and those transitioning back into civilian life as our armed forces downsize.” said Keven Prather, Financial Planner at Skylight Financial Group.
Reminiscing on his own first-hand experience of how the USO can make a lasting impression, Keven added, “Personally, I remember one particularly rough winter patrol in the Bering Sea where USO Christmas Packages were delivered to the ship while on a refueling stop at Adak Naval Air Station on Adak Island, Aleutians. Winter in the Aleutian Islands and Bering Sea is always bad, but for our patrol it was particularly nasty. The crew was glad to get a 15 hour respite from the sea to refuel and take on supplies.
A Naval cargo plane carried these packages accompanied by a USO representative, a brave woman in her 60s, who took great care to ensure this cargo reached us. Our crew received 89 packages, one for each man on the ship – there were close to 2,000 marines and naval personnel on Adak and I don’t believe anyone missed out.
To those where Christmas 1988 was just a day in the patrol log, this made it feel a bit like home – all made possible by the USO. Later I learned that this woman’s son was killed in a military training accident while in the U.S. Navy and she viewed all Sailors and Marines as her boys. This was one of those moments in life your never forget. One small example of what volunteers for the USO do for our service men and women in uniform.”
If you wish to donate to the USO, feel free to contact Keven Prather or go to www.USO.org to learn more about the fantastic organization.
