Steve Thompson of Skylight Attends NFL Combine

As a die-hard football fan and former player in my younger years, you can imagine how thrilled I was (check out the big smile on my face!) to land the chance to go to this year’s NFL Combine at the Lucas Oil Stadium on Feb 27th.

Interest in the Combine has exploded in recent years and it was really exciting to see to these young college football players in the biggest audition of their lives.  All the pro teams were there – coaches, managers, scouts and even owners of NFL teams – so to watch each player be tested through unique drills was amazing.  I got to attend a session for quarterbacks and wide receivers and I was particularly excited that I got to watch Jared Goff work out.  He’s the Quarterback the Cleveland Browns may draft this year as their new QB. I thought he was really impressive – the scouts feel he is ready to play on the professional level and might be able to help the Browns soon.

One of the main highlights for me was getting to see Dallas Cowboys Head Coach Jason Garrett there, who I went to high school with at University School.  I remember that back then Jason would even take time after his practice ended to others with techniques.  He was a great coach back then so it’s easy to see why he’s so successful as a Head Coach in the NFL.

As I left the stadium, I was still buzzing with excitement and felt very fortunate to be one of just over 1,000 fans who got to enjoy this neat experience.  Although access remains tightly controlled, each year the Combine opens its doors to more fans - this year it was up from 600 last year and up from 300 when they first opened it up to fans.  I’ve no doubt they could fill the entire stadium – after all what football fan wouldn’t love to witness this spectacle of speed, explosion and skill.
