Skylight Celebrates Success at Leaders Conference in Chicago

Acrobats, a beach day, zoo trips, fireworks, blues music and a river cruise were just some of the activities that Skylight’s qualifying team members enjoyed at this year’s Leaders Conference in Chicago from July 15-19.  Leaders Conference is Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company’s (MassMutual) largest annual recognition conference which not only celebrates the hard work and success of qualifiers in 2017, but is also a thank you for their continued dedication.

(Check out the video photo collage below).

Skylight qualifiers, their family members, and guests joined nearly 4,000 others to hear motivational speakers, network with colleagues, enjoy interesting and historical attractions and have fun. This year’s headline guest speakers were Jake Wood, co-founder and chief executive officer of Team Rubicon, and Common, the Academy Award-winning actor, film producer, poet, and recording artist.  The week culminated in a farewell evening dubbed a “Kaleidoscope of Color” at one of Chicago’s most famous landmarks, Soldier Field, home of the Chicago Bears.

Doug Rechtine, Partner and Financial Advisor at Skylight’s Toledo office said: “The conference was a wonderful experience for me and my family.  The opening night event at Navy Pier was a great venue to kick off the conference, the entertainment and food were superb. The closing night at Soldier Field was a great set up and very well structured for the entire family. All in all, the entire conference was a first-class event …. I am glad I attended!”

Tyler Wyse, Financial Advisor at Skylight’s Toledo office, added: “It was a great conference. The general session meetings were well put together, and had quality speakers.  Jake Wood and Common were very inspiring and Co-Advisor of the Year, Paul Ferrante had some great insight into what it takes to go from an advisor starting out to be one of the top advisors in MassMutual.  The entertainment and events were also top notch and the conference surpassed other years. It was a great opportunity to meet and converse with other leading advisors in Ohio.  I am glad I didn’t miss out on this conference!”

At the conference, Skylight also received recognition as a Chairman’s Trophy winner for its agency performance in 2017.

“We are so proud of everyone who worked so hard to qualify for the 2018 Leaders Conference. It was the best Leaders Conference I have attended and I would say the envy of the financial industry. It amazes me how much is learned and how relationships are formed through the social activities and networking.  We are already looking forward to Nashville in 2019!” said Mike Connole, Managing Partner at Skylight.

10 Questions with Mike Kessling Sr., Financial Planner, Cincinnati

His long-term interest in entrepreneurship and family business started at age six, “working” on the roofs of the homes built by his father’s construction company.  In the latest of our “Making It Personal” Q&A series, we discover a little more about one of our veteran financial planners, Mike Kessling Sr..

And don’t forget to check out some lovely photos of his family below!

Are you from Cincinnati and what do you like most about the city?

Yes, I’ve lived in Cincinnati all my life except for four years which I spent at John Carroll University (JCU).

What I particularly love about Cincinnati is its central location. It is accessible to many other places and there are flights to all parts of the world.  There’s even a direct flight to Iceland now with WOW!

I also love the city for its community values.  It’s a great place to raise a family and has great schools.

You have been in the financial services industry for 46 years, what do you find most rewarding about being a financial planner?

I thrive on being an entrepreneur.  I find it incredibly rewarding to build my practice and serve my clients in such a way that I can help make a real difference to their lives and form life-long friendships along the way.

The world changes quickly, and over the many years I have been in practice, I always remain focused on staying relevant to my clients and finding ways to help them.

If you hadn’t chosen to pursue a career as a financial planner, what do you think you would have been?

A sports announcer on radio or tv.  I have always loved playing and following sports.

What do you like to do outside of work?

This has changed over the years, but my number one interest at present is my grandchildren. I also read voraciously and golf has always been a love of mine.

My wife Carol and I are now empty nesters (we have been married for 43 years and that is my biggest achievement), but when our three kids were younger and living with us, we did a lot of family activities like boating and other sports.

What’s the best advice you have received?

Listen, be persistent and always try to always have a great attitude.

You like to travel, what’s the most interesting place you have ever visited and why?

This is very tough, but I would probably choose La Romana/Casa de Campo in the Dominican Republic. and its golf courses.  It’s a great area, with spectacular scenery.  The area is still developing and you see armed guards, however, the golf courses, in particular, The Teeth of the Dog, has an amazing layout, with seven of its holes running along the Caribbean Sea!

Who do you most admire and why?

I’m not hugely religious, but I admire Jesus for his humbleness.

Also, my mother and father.  They set a great example and were always there for me. I still can’t comprehend the extent of my mother’s love for us.  She’s 95 and I still get to see her often.

What’s the most adventurous thing you have ever done?

Probably high-speed motorcycling, but will not tell you how fast!  Slalom skiing 21 miles on the Ohio River and Russian Boar Hunting in Texas.

Any unknown or little-known fact about you

I’m a Member of the Million Dollar Round Table for 42 years, 2 Court of the Tables and 1 Top of the Table.

As a financial planner with vast experience, what advice would you give to anyone starting out in the financial services industry?

It’s not easy starting out in this industry, so you need to have an unwavering belief in yourself that you are going to be successful.  Particularly in the first five years, I would recommend doing joint work, finding a good mentor and being a “sponge”.

It is also very important to have an approachable and pleasing personality and a good value system.

Thanks, Mike for sharing with us!

10 Questions with Rod Skaf, Partner and Financial Planner, Columbus

He is a talented linguist who learned from a young age the importance of being ethical and working hard. In the latest of our “Making It Personal” Q&A series, we discover a little more about one of our experienced financial planners, Rod Skaf (check out the amazing photos of Rod below).

Are you Columbus born and bred?
No, I’m from Lebanon in the Middle East.  I came to the United States in 1988 to do an MBA and stayed on!  Before that, I graduated from Lebanon University with a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering but as there wasn’t much opportunity in this field, I joined the financial services industry, with MetLife, after completing my MBA.   Fast forward to today and I’m still working as a financial planner 22 years later.

What do you like most about Columbus?
What I particularly like about Columbus is that it’s a family city where everyone says hello and smiles.  It’s a fun place with a close-knit community.  The weather can be severe in winter but otherwise, it’s a very nice place to live.

What do you find most rewarding about being a financial planner?
Helping people get ahead of the game.  I love working with clients to help them manage their finances and take them from today’s position and help them reach tomorrow’s goals.  For example, I love helping to bring structure to their savings, sorting their insurance or helping them get their house in order – really whatever it takes to make them feel more secure and empowered.
I’ve now worked with many of my clients 22 years.  I treat them like family and it’s great to see the positive impact planning has had on their lives.

Tell us about your hobbies and interests outside of work?
I mostly work and travel lots as I have clients from Upstate New York to San Diego and many places in between.  I like to attend conferences and industry events.

When I travel for pleasure I do fun stuff like hiking with my wife and, when we are down South, I go scuba diving in the warm water.

What’s the most interesting place you have ever visited and why?
There are so many interesting places. Johannesburg sticks out for me as it’s such a vibrant city and changing so fast.  When I was in South Africa I got to go on safari and to the Victoria Falls – both were amazing experiences.

I also really like Europe and particularly Amsterdam.  And I have been to Dubai several times.  It’s a very different and fascinating place.  Despite being hot and humid, there’s amazing construction, lots to do and people there from every conceivable part of the world.

Where do you like to grab a bite to eat in Columbus?
I like Italian restaurants and close to the office, Vittoria, is one of my favorites.   I also like ethnic restaurants – Thai, Indian and Middle Eastern.  There’s such a great variety and choice of restaurants in Columbus.  I have been to cooking classes too, where I’ve learned more about preparing sushi and Middle Eastern food.  As you can probably tell, I like to eat!

Tell us something you know a lot about?
I know the planning process like the back of my hand. I can easily interpret what it takes to help achieve, extend or reduce goals or to account for a long life.  I know a lot about longevity income for when we are part of this world and, also for when we are gone.

I speak three languages fluently – French (from my mom), Arabic (from my dad) and English!

Tell us something you are passionate about?
People. I love people, not stuff.  I’m personable and it’s in my nature to want to help others. I don’t just mean clients. If I look out of the window and see someone in the street, I want to chat and reach out to them.

What’s your biggest achievement?
I wouldn’t single out one specific achievement but I’m very proud of what I have achieved in my career and in education.  Learning puts me on top of the clouds.  I have two Masters degrees, one in Business and the other in Finance; also, my several financial designations.  I have also started a Ph.D. in finance.  I believe in being ethical and working hard to achieve what you want – that’s what we learned as kids.  I guess I’m quite a straightforward person.

Any unknown fact about you
I’m 67, and I am still very fit and active.  The doctor says I’m in great health.  People often judge others by their age but I almost feel younger and as strong as ever!

Meet Tina Ramnytz Skylight’s New Financial Planning Administrator

What do you like to do in your spare time?

I like being outdoors and am looking forward to all of the spring and summer activities my family enjoys together, such as hiking, camping, fishing, kayaking, and bonfires. I also enjoy reading, music, playing board games, and making all kinds of arts and crafts projects.

What’s your favorite thing about Cleveland?

I enjoy the hustle and bustle of larger cities and having so much going on around me. I also love being so close to the west side market!

What college did you go to and what did you study?

I went to the University of Akron for my bachelors in international business. I received my Juris doctor from Western Michigan University Cooley Law School. I am currently licensed and in good standing with the State Bar of Michigan.

What’s your biggest achievement?

My biggest achievement is helping raise my three stepchildren: Ally, Colton, and Zach. Co-parenting has taught me a lot over the years about compromise and tenacity; while I don’t think they ever doubt how much they are loved, they can’t possibly know how proud I am of each of them. They’re really awesome, the vast majority of the time (the rest of the time, well, 2 out of 3 are teenagers!).

Tell us something you know a lot about?

Though I’m not licensed here in Ohio, I know a lot about the law from practicing in Michigan at the Genesee County Prosecutor’s Office and in private practice doing legal contract review work on a variety of cases. I’m also very fascinated by the theories and origins of the law (which can be translated to say that I geek out over the Constitution).

Something you would like to learn more about?

I would like to learn more about estate planning and trusts.

Who do you most admire and why?

I admire my sister, Melissa, because of the way she balances actively raising my niece and nephew with her husband, Scott, while furthering her education and professional goals; all while managing to find time to volunteer and have hobbies and friends.

A little known or fun fact about you

I have two large dogs who are convinced that they’re lapdogs. They help keep me active and make me smile every day.

What are you looking forward to most about working at Skylight?

I am looking forward to being part of a client-focused team who is dedicated to helping people achieve their goals by aligning their finances with their values.

Meet Jenna Kinsey Skylight’s New Marketing Coordinator

What do you like to do in your spare time?

Hang out with friends and family, read, shop at Target, and buy things for my new apartment.

What’s your favorite thing about Cleveland?

The history – I like learning more about the different areas and how they’ve grown and changed over the years. I love going to concerts in the city.

What college did you go to and what did you study?

I graduated from Ohio University in 2014 where I majored in marketing in the College of Business.

What’s your biggest achievement?

Moving out of my Mom & Dad’s house!

Tell us something you know a lot about?

I have a really good working knowledge of medical terminology through Grey’s Anatomy. So, if you’re ever in a medical emergency you should definitely still seek professional help.

Something you would like to learn more about?

I’d love to eventually be able to travel and learn more about different countries around the world from first-hand experience.

Who do you most admire and why?

My parents because they raised three kids while both worked full-time as teachers. They have always been there for us in support, and have set a great example of what I want for my future family.

A little known or fun fact about you

I got to meet Rodney Atkins (country singer) at a private concert in the desert for an event that I planned in Arizona.

What are you looking forward to most about working at Skylight?

I’m looking forward to meeting and getting to know new people and to learn more about a new industry.

Skylight Welcomes New Financial Planner Marielle Hoffman

Skylight Financial Group is pleased to announce that Marielle Hoffman has joined our Cleveland office as an Associate and Financial Planner. Marielle, who has an MBA in marketing and finance, brings extensive experience and business skills to her practice, having worked for nearly 30 years, at a senior level, in product and brand marketing, before joining the financial services industry four years ago.  She has since been working as a financial professional with individuals and businesses helping them develop holistic plans.

Since joining the financial services industry, Marielle has not looked back.  She is passionate about educating people and using her analytical skills to help them overcome obstacles and explore opportunities.  She thrives on connecting with people, making them feel comfortable talking about their finances so that she can fully work  with them to help them reach the next level and secure a better future.  Helping her clients make a significant breakthrough is what Marielle finds most fulfilling.

Mike Connole, Managing Partner of Skylight Financial Group, said, “We are delighted to have Marielle join our firm.  She brings a wealth of experience and business savvy to our clients who will value her insight, her ability to build relationships and her analytical and project management skills – all of which enable her to deliver an exceptional level of service to her clients.  She is also a great asset to our community through her volunteer work with organizations such as the Alzheimer’s Association and Zonta who help empower business women through service and advocacy”.

On joining Skylight, Marielle said, “I am really looking forward to working with Skylight as it offers opportunities I wouldn’t have elsewhere.  My motivation for becoming a financial planner was to help people.  For a long time, it had been at the back of my mind to explore the “finance” side of my MBA, so when my husband was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and we found ourselves totally unprepared and inadequately protected, I knew this was the right career for me as I wanted to help others avoid the pitfalls that my husband and I had experienced.  Helping people remains my number one goal, and as Skylight provides better resources and support in areas like investment and planning, it felt like a great fit and one that would ultimately benefit my clients.”

Marielle currently resides in Cuyahoga Falls.  She enjoys gardening, is a member of a local French club and organizes a cycling trip with her brother each year.  Back in her junior year, when she spent a year in France, she cycled from Montpellier up to the Loire Valley.  A trip of 600 miles, with many mountain climbs – no mean feat!

Marielle can be reached by email mariellehoffman@financialguide.com or by phone at (440) 857-3003 or (330) 322-5669.
