Jeffery Urizar-Los Angeles, California

What School do you attend and why did you choose it?Jeff Urizar professional photo

I am currently attending Ohio Northern University. ONU offered me a great financial aid package and various scholarships. The small class sizes and the fact that the professors know each of their students by name was something I loved about it.

Why did you decide to participate in Skylight’s intern program?

I decided to be an Intern for Skylight because they really have a positive impact on the communities around them. Having the opportunity to be a part of that impact made my decision very easy.

What is the most valuable lesson you have learned during your time here at SFG?

The most valuable lesson I have learned here at Skylight is that one gets what one puts in. Your effort will dictate your success, so you have to get after it every day.

Who is your role model? What do you admire about them?

My role model is my father, his no-nonsense attitude and great worth ethic have made it possible for my family and I to live comfortable lives. He came to the US with nothing to his name and now he has a rewarding profession that can support a big family. He motivates me every day to be the best that I can be.

What is the most adventurous thing you have ever done?

The most adventurous thing I’ve ever done is take a road trip from Los Angeles to Ohio Northern University in the middle of winter, in a 2000 Toyota Echo with 250,000 miles on it!

What school do you attend, and why did you choose it?

I am currently a studying at John Carroll University. I chose John Carroll for their excellent business program and their competitive golf team.

Why did you decide to participate in Skylight’s intern program?

I have been interested in financial planning since I was young! I was looking to acquire some first-hand experience on what the industry is like, and Skylight was able to give me that opportunity.

What is the most valuable lesson you have learned during your time here at SFG?

I would say the most valuable lesson I have learned is persistence is vital if you want to be successful. You might slip up along the way, but if you continue to move forward and challenge yourself, you can take on anything.

Outside the office, what are you passionate about?

Golf has always been a passion of mine, I have been playing since I was nine years old. I look forward to the season every year and having the chance to compete on the team at John Carroll has been a fantastic opportunity to further my skills.

What would a sandwich named after you have on it?

The “Chris Sloe” would have lots of bacon, eggs, cheese, and ham on it. I know that’s basically a breakfast sandwich from Dunkin, but I could eat that for every meal!

What college do you currently attend? Why did you choose to go there?

I am currently attending my last semester at Northern Kentucky University. I gravitated towards smaller schools because I was looking for small class sizes and the opportunity to connect with my instructors, so NKU seemed like the perfect fit.

Why did you decide to participate in Skylight’s intern program?

I chose to participate in Skylight’s intern program to gain insight on the daily life of a financial professional, to find out if this industry is one I could see myself building a career in.

What is the most valuable lesson you have learned during your time here at SFG?

I learned the importance of “listening to understand—NOT listening to talk next.” I heard this saying numerous times throughout my internship and it has really resonated with me. It has changed the way I see business and relationship building Justin Hiking with his girlfriendfor the better.

Who is your role model? What do you admire about them?

Mark Treas is a personal hero of mine. He is a successful entrepreneur and public speaker. I admire him because he upholds Christian values in all his business practices.

What board game do you believe you have the best chance of winning and why?

The Settlers of Catan! I have been playing that board game for many years. I am a master of in-game strategies and how to effectively combat others.

What school do you attend, and why did you choose it?

I am a senior at John Carroll University. I decided on John Carroll, so I could obtain a degree from the highly-regarded Boler College of Business and have the chance to compete on the school’s soccer team. John Carroll’s commitment to Jesuit ideals is another aspect of the school that I loved, encouraging students to partake in service efforts and retreats.

Why did you decide to participate in Skylight’s intern program?

Ever since my first visit, Skylight has left a huge impact on me. The leadership here really does all they can to support you, making the program a great learning experience for those of us about to graduate! It is also nice to be a part of a company that truly cares about the communities they serve.

What is the most valuable lesson you have learned during your time here at SFG?

The most valuable lesson I have learned is how to build lasting relationships. To succeed in networking, you need to be able to ask the right questions and listen with purpose. This has really shaped the way I interact in a professional setting.

Outside the office, what are you passionate about?

Outside of my work at Skylight, I pursue many entrepreneurial projects. In the past I have started a digital media company, and now I am working on a FinTech startup with two business partners. I believe a entrepreneur is someone that embraces tough challenges and uncomfortable situations, while learning every step of the way. It is that challenge that motivates to continue learning and trying new things.

If you absolutely had to sing karaoke, what song would you pick?

No doubt in my mind it would be “Good Vibrations” by Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch. Perfect song to get the crowd going!

Lukas Indre-Brunswick, Ohio

What college do you currently attend? Why did you choose to go there?

I currently attend The Ohio State University. I chose this school because of its outstanding academic reputation, plus I have been a Buckeyes fan for as long as I can remember!

Why did you decide to participate in Skylight’s intern program?

I decided on this program because I love to connect with people and wanted to learn more about the financial industry as a whole. The internship also seemed like a rewarding experience that would challenge me.

What is the most valuable lesson you have learned during your time here at SFG?

I learned that any relationship you try to foster must be built on trust, honesty and understanding! Also speaking with confidence is key in this business, even if you may not know the right answer.

What is something about you that surprises most people?

I am on Ohio State’s powerlifting team and have competed at the national level. I also have 3 Yorkshire Terriers which surprises people because I’m a pretty big guy.  People laugh when they see me walking all three of them, since their collective weight is about 20 pounds.

If you absolutely had to sing karaoke, what song would you pick?

Halo by Beyoncé, no brainer!
