Skylight Extends its Financial Planning Services to Pro Athletes
Steven Thompson MSFS, ChSNC, BCAA, CAS, CFS has recently added NFLPA Registered Player Financial Advisor to Skylight’s growing list of professional designations and will service the financial needs of professional athletes. Steve, who is 1 of 4 advisors in the state of Ohio on the NFLPA’s list of registered advisors, will collaborate with pro athletes to create comprehensive financial plans that will address not only their immediate needs but help sustain their income for years to come.
For many professional athletes, understanding and managing their finances can be a real struggle. They acquire substantial amounts of money in a short space of time and run the risk of making costly mistakes, often through no fault of their own. The NFLPA Registered Player Financial Advisor Program is the first of its kind in professional sports and was set up by the players themselves to protect against poor financial advice and outright fraud. Registered advisors must meet strict eligibility standards, appropriate professional qualifications, professional designations, background checks, due diligence and be educated to the specific needs of players.
Steve, who brings over 20 years of experience in the investment arena to this role and also serves as the Investment Specialist at Skylight Financial Group said, “I’m really looking forward to working with professional athletes as an NFLPA Registered Advisor. I want to help them continue their early-life success by giving them tools to plan for their future and prepare for life beyond their professional sports career. Each clients’ needs are unique and this couldn’t be truer than for athletes. Their careers are typically short and they need to carefully plan for the various stages of their life and manage their cash-flow accordingly.”
Steve added, “We can help them by providing professional guidance, enabling them to wisely handle their new wealth and stay on track to achieve their long-term life goals. We’ve helped various athletes and one, in particular, stands out as he always says he wished he’d met us 14 years before! We set him, and others, on the right track and we want to do the same for more athletes in a similar position.”
