Skylight Showcase: New Hires of June 2019

We would like to take a moment to introduce the newest members of the Skylight team! Meet Doug Cohen and Michael Anderson below:

Doug Cohen, Financial Professional, Cleveland

Why did you choose to work at Skylight?

I chose to work at Skylight Financial Group because I recently graduated college with a degree in design but have always yearned to get my hands into the financial services industry. Skylight provides me with the opportunity to really experience the nitty gritty of the finance world, in addition to working alongside a team of highly experienced financial planners.  The firm truly encourages me to help the people and causes I care about.

What causes, community services do you have a passion for?

I am very passionate about the environment and community health. I am always looking for opportunities to reduce my consumption and carbon footprint. I also run a public Instagram account that promotes daily exercise, cooking for fun, and healthy eating. Additionally, I’m an advocate for mental health awareness and women’s rights within the community health space.

What is something about you that surprises most people?

I love origami! When I was in middle school especially I spent my weekends watching YouTube videos about the art of paper folding. My favorite thing to fold was (and still is) an origami Lily. In fact, I got so good at it that I ended up folding more than a thousand, some of which served as table centerpieces at my bar mitzvah party. The rest were featured as an art piece in my hometown community center. I don’t make them much anymore, but when I do, I give them to people to show how much I love and appreciate them!

If you could only watch one movie for the rest of your life what would it be?

Ratatouille, without question. It is what inspired me to start cooking at a young age and learning to refine my palette. In fact, I’ve already watched it enough times that I could probably recite the entire script by heart. It’s also one of those movies where you can’t not be eating something while you watch the movie because the food looks so delicious.

Outside of the office, what do you like to do?

I’m very active and outdoorsy. Hiking, downhill skiing, waterskiing, golf, ultimate frisbee, camping, canoeing – you name it! Chances are I love to do it. My family has a rustic lake cabin in northern Ontario, Canada, where I always go every summer because it satisfies my desires to be surrounded in nature, be physically active, and spend quality time with my family.

Michael Anderson, Financial Professional, Cincinnati

Why did you choose to work at Skylight?

I chose to work at Skylight because of the passion and personal commitments they have toward their clients.  Skylight has given me the freedom to be an individual, yet they provide me with a team of experts and financial resources. My dream is to help others by providing them a solution to reach their financial goals.

What causes, community services do you have a passion for?

I have much respect for our military and first responders.  Over the past 5 years I have had the opportunity to participate in the Miami Valley Wounded Veterans Shoot, a local fundraiser in which 100% of the proceeds go to fund returning veterans with disabilities. In addition, while at Ohio Christian University I volunteered at the local food pantry with the baseball team preparing food and drinks on Sunday evenings for those in need.

Outside of the office, what do you like to do?

If I’m not at the ball park, I’m probably spending time in the woods, at the lake, or by the river.  I love playing baseball, hunting, and fishing.

What life achievement are you most proud of?

The achievement I am most proud of is playing on the baseball team at Ohio Christian University on a Baseball Scholarship.

Tell us about a few things you have on your bucket list.

  • Go to Israel where I could see where Jesus walked. I think it would be a breathtaking experience.
  • Ride a bucking bull…I have always wanted to do this since I was a young kid.
  • Visit every Major League baseball park in the country to experience a game.

If you absolutely had to sing karaoke, what song would you pick?

Oh boy! I am a terrible singer and completely tone deaf. So, if I had to sing a song it would have to be “Tequila” by The Champs because it only has three words and all three of them are “Tequila!”

Thank you for your time, gentlemen!
